explorer-l.gif - 30041 Bytes On Friday, July 23rd, Jim Aylor, Betty (Rush) Guy, Patty (Spaulding) Rook,
Joan (Harris) Lloyd and Jimmy Harper are going to engage in an in- depth episode
of “Memory Chasing” that will take us all over North Memphis and any other points
that we deem necessary and interesting. Our body-guard for this adventure will
be Jim Aylor and we will spend a considerable amount of time around Jackson Street,
Chelsea, Thomas, Lauderdale, Poplar, Manassas, Parkway, Orleans, Ayers, Vollentine,
Mosby, Alabama and all the other areas that supported the attendees of good old
“Humes High School.
Those of you that are still pretty mobile and still have some fond memories and
would be interested to visit “Malone Swimming Pool” one more time along with
other places like Porky’s at Chelsea and Thomas and other points of interest,
let us know via the web page and we’ll see what we can arrange.
I need your help on a little trivia that could possibly boost my intelligent
quotient and maybe denigrate Jim Aylor’s, where exactly was Fortune’s Jungle
Garden located. To be more specific, what street intersected with Union that
housed this landmark? Jim Harper

A Friend sent this email... It's really scary!!!     Everyone should know this!!     I didn"t!!
This is disturbing to say the least.
when you first open the U-tube video it will start with a non-related commercial (about 30 sec or so)
just wait and view an amazing revelation about copiers! ! ! !

Before you think "yeah, well, I never use a copier, not even at the office supply/shipping
store", think of all those who have your papers that do. Accountants, attorneys, health
professionals...the list goes on.
Watch it to the end for the scariest bit. Identity theft, anyone?

A rumor is circulating that about nine to ten graduates on the 1954 Class gathered
at one of their homes in central Mississippi for an extended weekend of festivities and during
the process a law enforcement agent entered this home and proceeded to perform sobriety test on
about seven or eight of them and had this wild partying taken place in a private residence, it
is reported that several of them would have spent the rest of the weekend in jail and be facing a
substantial fine. Your humble web-master will neither confirm or deny this incident, he only
reports the information that is sent to him
.
The web master WILL confirm tho,,, "That we had a great time!"

I have had a miserable last 3 weeks wheelchair bound.
My Smoky Bear daughter Tina accidentally started a grassfire.
When I saw it I ran to try to help her put it out. We ended up
calling the fire dept. When I got to a slight incline covered
with pine needles, I slipped and fell. I did protect my knee
replacement leg, but did tremendous damage to my right foot-broke
both big bones on each ankle and fractured numerous bones in
between. My doctor said I did a good job of setting a record for
broken foot bones. I knew when I fell, I had broken something
because I heard and felt the popping. I have to keep this foot
elevated and absolutely no weight on it at least 6 weeks, 3 more
to go.
I go back to Dr. March 16. I will then find out what I can or cannot do.

It is hard to believe we graduated 54+ years ago. I don't feel
that old but birthdays have a way of smacking you with reality so
I know it's true.
I have attended most of the reunions and so enjoyed seeing everyone
and hearing where life has taken them. Even though I have been living
in Arizona for the past 50 years, I have kept in contact with a lot
of my classmates as well as those who graduated before and after we did.
When we get together it's like old times and we take up where we left
off on the last visit.
It is sad that many of our class are no longer with us and missed
by all, but always remembered.
I hope everyone who can attend the 55th Reunion will do so -
it is truly a coming together or "old" and cherished friends.

It has been a while since anyone posted anything new on
our page to hopefully create interest and excitement and there are
several of you that have not posted anything, WHY?
I heard a rumor that Jim and Brenda Aylor are expecting another
baby and while I personally find this hard to believe it should never
the less be checked out. I know that Brenda is young enough but I am
of the opinion that Jim is just too d--- old to cut the mustard anymore.
Of course it could also refer to another grandchild but I like the
first part better. Or it could just be exactly what I said and
only a rumor but wouldn’t it be funny if it were true.

Let's get ready for your 55th Class reunion!

Betty (Rush) Guy and Jerry (Hound Dog) Wilson are beginning to assimilate
information on the interest level for a 55th Class Reunion in June of 2009.

They will welcome any assistance in locating any of our classmates, so if you
know the address, phone number or e-mail address of some of the “54” group,
please get in touch with Betty or Jerry. In conversation with Betty, I do know
that she has located Lawrence McRay who missed our 50th so progress is being made.

It may seem early to start talking about June of 2009 but the time and energy
it will take to locate and organize this event will be enormous. I am of the
opinion that several classmates that missed our 50th now regret it and will look
forward to a 55th.You may reach Betty at (731) 435-1135 or e-mail her at
bettyguy01@charter.net. You can reach Jerry at (901) 475-0063 or e-mail him at
Wilson_jerry@bellsouth.net.

Please join us in making this a reality for 2009.

We have lost many of our classmates that I’m sure many wish they could have
seen again so let’s don’t let this opportunity slip by us.
Thanks

Hi Bill,
Just want to wish our '54 classmates the happiest of holidays.
I am keeping real busy with our sports programs. Producing fanfests
for Cincinnati Reds in December and in January, we have scheduled
fanfests for the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals. I was recently
in Toronto,CA discussing the development of a fanfest for hockey....
something I never thought I would ever hear a southern boy say.
I would love to hear from you...we could talk about grandchildren and
such...things that are really important.

Email from Jim Harper
Lynn and I recently returned from her 50th Class Reunion
with the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis as the host hotel.
An interesting side note, Kemmons Wilson, the founder of
Holiday Inns, built this property and then donated it to what
I still call Memphis State. Pretty neat, he was an exceptional
man.
Meanwhile, back to the subject. I am convinced that people who
attended Messick High must age faster than those from Humes and
maybe Tech. This group had the appearance of having originated at
one of the local nursing homes. They are a nice group, but damn,
they are old. There is no way this group could have stayed with
our group almost three years ago when we stayed up for three
successive nights until it was actually the next day. I believe
that their aging process could have something to do with all the
hot dogs from Berratta's. As you are probably aware, hot dogs are
made from dead pigs and there is no way they are going to help
you stay young. Also, this group does not consume enough alcohol
to ward off infirmities and aging. The only two people other than
my lovely wife that looked as young as us, was a Humes graduate of
1955, Freeman Force and Betty Black Dawson, the wife of our

former Humes graduate, Bobby Dawson. It was pretty evident that
Betty's long years of association with Bobby contributed to her
youthful appearance.
O.K., that is enough "Who Shot John" for now. Really this is a
good group of people that I always enjoy spending time with and
we have a lot of fun. And even though the President of their
Senior Class cast aspersions on my good name, I still like them.
He had the audacity to make the additional comment as he thanked
those that hosted the Hospitality Room, that about the only thing
Lynn's husband, Jim, did was sit on the couch, drink whiskey and
tell dirty jokes. I do take exception to that remark because I
also stood up a good bit, drink whiskey and told dirty jokes.
We Humes people have a reputation that we must protect. Even
though one of the girls said that her Mom would not let her date
boys from Humes, she was somewhat enthralled with me. Another said
Saturday night or maybe Sunday morning (she was not drunk) that
I had a rugged, rough but handsome face. It only took about one
half a bottle of Crown to get this compliment.

At least this will give us something new on our web page.

A thought from Cherry
I just thought of a few things girls wore in the 50's besides that lovely
poodle skirt that I slipped past wearing several pounds and years ago. Maybe
given more options we'll have a better 50's turn out on The 14th.
Pencil or (as most of us called them) straight skirts, matching sweater sets,
small square scarves that we folded into a triangle and tied with a square
knot around our necks, pedal pushers, peasant blouses.....and didn't we wear
moccasins or was that just the guys. How about charm bracelets or was that
another decade?
I'm sure there are some Ladies out there with a better memory than mine and I
appeal to them to help. Otherwise our dress options are limited to mostly the
unthinkable.
Til soon,
Cherry

Another thought from Jim harper!
It may be too late to make any of these ideas work even if you think it
would be fun, but here goes anyway.
(1) Recognize the classmate that travels the longest distance to attend.
(Rosalyn may have a lock on this)
(2) Who was the first classmate to embark on the sea of matrimony?
(3) Which classmate did the best job of replenishing the earth. (Maybe two categories: kids and grandkids)
See ya!

Bill has tried hard to keep in touch with you three and with his typing skills that hasn't been easy so I
know he'd want me to let you know that he died Monday. His sister Betty and her husband were here
   with us.
Katy and her husband had just left Sunday afternoon. He'd talked on the phone with his son in Ohio and Betty's
kids. He'd done everything he knew to do to get things ready for me to take over.On Sunday morning,
Kate was feeding him and he kept dozing off. She asked if he was going to eat or nap. His reply was, "I'm either
going to take a nap or go home." Finally he said, "Well, I'll just take a nap this time." Monday morning he
   decided to go on home.
Please make sure that some notice is added to the Humes website. He's talked so much about you

Just wanted to let you know Jerry and I are still in Florida and do not know when we will return to Memphis,
but hope by the end of April. Jerry is getting stronger and we go to lunch and dinner with friends and he is able to
putt for 10 to 15 minutes . The doctor stopped one of the medications last week because of the change in his heart
which had not been there before, so we are hopeful that will be better when we go back on the 2nd of April. We will
see the trauma doctor middle of April and maybe then we can travel. He is still on the coumadin and some blood
pressure medicine.
We really appreciate all the prayers because he had a very slim chance of making it thru this and we know
the doctors had done all they could do. Again thank you it has meant so much for him to hear from all
of you.
See you at the reunion.

email from Charlie Talbert about Jerry
Talked to Jerry on the phone the other day. He was home from hospital. Voice was
low and raspy, almost a whisper, but we talked for several minutes. He told me about
the accident. Doctors were amazed as how quickly he is recovering from what could have
been life theatening injuries in a person not in as good condition and health as Jerry.
He was most appreciative for the cards, phone calls from many of you. He's got a way
to go before he's back to normal, but he and Harolyn plan to attend the reunion in May.
  All the best.

Talked to Harolyn Joyner, Sunday morning. Jerry is much improved.
Off the ventilator. Tubes out. Talking but hoarse. Sat up on
side of bed. Still in ICU but probably move soon. Long way
to go with recovery and weeks of rehab, but definitely    progressing well.
They appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, messaages and cards.

Email from Charley Talbert
I talked to Harolyn Joyner this morning.
Jerry is in "critical but stable" condition. Was broad-sided while stopped at a traffic light by woman coming off a ramp
and crossing six lanes of traffic before slamming into his car-he was driving. He was returning from a round of golf with
friends, one of whom was in car with him, but not seriously injured.
Jerry is still in surgical ICU and will be for another two weeks. He sustained cuts and abrasions, broken ribs, but most
serious Injuries were to internal organs.
Surgery performed to repair spleen. One lung collapsed, he's on ventilator.....Harolyn said he hasn't been able
to talk to her yet but acknowledges her presence with nods and pats on the hand.
I believe there is optimism that he will recover OK, but that he'll need several weeks/months of rehab.
He is in Lee Memorial Hospital, 2776 Cleveland Ave, Ft. Meyers, FL Hospital Phone Nr is 239-332-1111
He currently is on the Eighth Floor --Rm 8304 Surgical ICU--will be there for probably two more weeks.
He may receive cards, but no flowers in ICU. Cards may also be sent to home:
7964 Glenfinnan Circle, Ft. Meyers, FL 33912
Family members on both sides have gone down to Ft. Meyers to be with Jerry and Harolyn.
Will keep you posted if/when I get any more info.
Per Harolyn's request, I will also put this on the Humes1954 website.

I assured Harolyn our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Regards to all,
    Charles

I visited him at the Med Hospital this morning, 6-27-03, and spoke with his wife. Paul suffered a gun shot wound to the stomach requiring removal of his spleen and one of his kidneys. He is scheduled to have a tube inserted this
morning to aid with his breathing.
