I was trying to check on 3 graduates that I knew were having health problems at our last reunion. Robbie Sue Bishop (Strauser) is still about the same. She can no longer drive and has to have someone to help her with almost everything. She is also diabetic and has a pump. Her son lives in Atoka and daughter in Somerville, so that is hard on all of them, but she did sound in good spirits despite her illness. The wreck in 2004 has also created a lot of her problems. Jerry Lou Nall (Whitbeck) really has problems. She was not able to talk on the phone. Her husband said she broke her hip Oct 1st. Shortly after that she fell and broke her pelvic. Her Parkinson has also gotten real bad. He said overall, she really has major health problems. Wavel Lyons (Hughes) The phone # I had for Wavel in 2009 Is no longer a valid #. |

Joy McClendon is in the hospital and had surgery the day before yesterday for cancer. That’s all I know for now. Brenda talked to Charlene Wilson today and the problem Joy had was with her heart. She had surgery to remove some type of instrument from her chest and she will have her pacemaker removed in a couple of days. They didn’t want to do them both at the same time. She will be in the hospt. for several more days. Charlene said Paul was just worn out. |

I went to heart dr. yesterday and got a good report.after having congestive heart failure. He told me 30% of people who have that remain the same, 30% improve and 30% get worse. I plan to be in the 30% get better group. He explained the 10 prescriptions I left the hospital with ( I have changed the doctor from the one I had in Hopsital-did not like him) and even though 4 of them were for high blood pressure (mine is low) they also are for other reasons sure as building up heart muscles & other things to make my heart stronger. As of yesterday I DID NOT have irregular heart beat. It was good. He still wants me to stay on the coumadin for a while, but have it checked twice a week. I can do that in Henderson and do not have to go to Jackson so that will not be too bad. He wants to see me again in a month to have echocardiography Time for me to get off my lazy butt, get off the couch and get back to normal. |

We have just received word that Betty (Rush) Guy is in the hospital in Jackson TN (Jackson General). She needs our prayers for a quick recovery. As you can see, she just lost her father a few days ago. Jim Harper talked with Betty a few minutes ago and she seemed pretty good with all things considered and was resting pretty good. I called Bob Barnes so he can go by personally. I also ask Betty to call us when she got more details rather than us calling her at a bad time. |

She is doing very well, She is walking without the use of a walker and is even driving. She has not fully recovered and the doctor advised it would probably be May before she would be back to normal. She still has trouble climbing stairs and standing for extended periods of time, but hopefully this will gradually go away. She has finished her therapy with St Francis and doing it at home. I still worry when she drives as the major surgery was on her right ankle and that’s the foot she brakes with, but there was not stopping her. She is even going shopping, which is no surprise, Like my Barber said you can’t keep a good shopper down |

I talked to Patty Thursday afternoon. She has completed her treatments for now and gotten good reports from her doctors. She is to see her cancer dr. in 3 months and radiation dr. in 6 months. We had a good conversation and were able to make personal jokes about what the cancer treatments had done to our bodies. She did not lose her hair during her treatments, but beginning to lose a little now. That kind of worries her a little, but there are a lot of remedies for that. Didn't mean to send the "Blonde Cookbook" msg. to everyone. Just got confused as I meant to send msg. about Patty. That happens as you get older. None of you would know anything about that. Betty |

Jim comments about Brenda I took Brenda to the doctor today and they took off the cast. They said everything was healing very well and they put her right leg in the same kind of heavy rubber boot as she had on her left leg. I call them her Frankinstein shoes as that what they look like. The doctor told her she could put as much weight on both ankles as she could stand. She will start therapy next week. Jim and Lynn Harper came up tues and spent the night with us, Lynn cooked dinner for us tues. night and even brought the food with her. It was good to have them here as it lifted Brenda’s spirits and mine too. Brenda said it best today when she said that’s what good friends do. |

Brenda is making slow but steady progress, she still cannot put weight on either ankle and this has created a problem. We go to the doctor Wed. and we hope she will get a real cast on the broken ankle and he will let her start putting her weight on her left one and take off this large rubber boot she has on it. The thing is made not to slip and there is no way she can turn on it. My thanks to everyone for their concern and I will try to keep you up on things. Jim |

Thanks to all of you for your concern over Brenda’s mishap. She had her surgery today and it went well. We are in hopes she can go home tomorrow but it may be Tuesday. For all of you that ask, she is in room 438 West in the Germantown Meth. And her room phone no is 1-901-516 6138. I told her she was the most inconsiderate wife in the world. She could have waited until after we ate. I get my stitches out next week. Its going to be a long rehab period for her, Betty said 18 weeks and she would know as she just went through the same thing. My next door neighbors have been by twice, Barbara was their yesterday and Bill and Joan were their today when they brought her out of recovery. My thanks to all. |

After spending a great weekend in Ridgeland MS with the Harpers, on my way home I stopped by Patty's home to see how she was. She had the 2nd series of her treatment last Wednesday and she will have 4 more, the last one ending Dec. 15. This is radiation and a 5 hour treatment that has to be done in the hospital, but she said the 1st one was not as bad as she thought it would be. She has lost a lot of weight and is still very weak, but not near as sick now as she was while taking the chemo. Her sister from Tupelo and the rest of her family are going to be with her at her home Thanksgiving and they will do the cooking. Patty and her daughter Cheryl had been to the grocery and they had just gotten home before I got there. Patty was eating a backyard burger, so that was good. Hopefully by the end of her treatments she will begin to be her normal self and be able to do the things she enjoys doing. She must be feeling a lot better because she did make the Steinmart Sale a little while Saturday. (She usually never misses one of those.) HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILES. |

Back when the reunion commitee was meeting to plan the next reunion, a small group was meeting each month. After the the planning was over, they decided to keep on meeting. It was way too much fun to quit!! Since that time they have been meeting on a regular basis, at each of our homes. Sometime we travel as far away, as Jackson, MS, the Smokey Mtn, Henderson Tn and Olive Branch MS. and all over the Memphis area. Patty is one of our group. We are specially and prayerfully hopeful of her full recovery and hope that many of her Humes Friends will join us in a time of prayer for her.. Shirley Morgan McDonald has suggested a common minute for all to pray for her. May I suggest, early each morning, when the day is fresh, and our day is just starting, we take a minute to seek her refreshment of strength and will. |

| I have just talked to Patty's daughter. Patty got dehydrated yesterday and had to be taken to the hospital. She also has an urinary infection. Patty thought she would just have to stay overnight and be home this morning. Dana-Patty's youngest daughter- thinks she might get to come home tomorrow, depending on her blood count. She has finished all her chemo and will start the next round of radiation the 17th. I guess that will really depend on her blood count and how she is doing by then. I do have Dana's phone # now, so if I can't get in touch with Patty, I can call Dana. Being a cancer survivor myself (15 years ago) I can relate to how Patty is feeling and it hurts me to know the pain she is going through. Prayer is a strong source of power, so remember her in yours. Betty |

| Hi everyone: I have been saying prayers for Patty and we know that every prayer is heard. Lets all have a prayer on a set day and time. Someone in the Memphis area set it up and those of us in other parts of the country will adjust to that time. What do you think??? Shirley |

Tuesday morning 8:10 -- Patty just called me. She just had her radiation treatment and was driving to work. She sounded much better than she did the last time I talked to her. She said the first part of the week she didn't not feel as bad as she does by the end of the the end of the week. As of now, she will finish treatments by Dec. 12 if she continues to do well. She is now worried about not being able to eat all the Christmas food. It was good talking to her this morning. |

EMAIL from Betty (Rush) Guy 10/17/2010 I just talked to Patty. She is not feeling too great now. The treatments are beginning to make her feel bad. She is having blood pressure problems and loss of appetite. She has lost 10 lbs. She is still trying to work everyday, but by the weekend she doesn't feel like doing anything. At this time, she does not think she will be able to be with the group this weekend, but said she would call me later this week. I thought after 5 weeks of radiation, that would finish her treatments. Now she tells me she will have to have 5 more radiation treatments-one a week for 5 more weeks. Those treatments will be given in the hospital and take 5 hours. I plan to come to Memphis early next weekend and will go by her house to see her Saturday before going to the Aylors. Seeing her in person will let me know better how she is doing. |

| From: Alessio To: wlloyd1@comcast.net Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2010 4:13 PM Subject: Humes High School: 1949-53From: Alessio To: wlloyd1@comcast.net Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2010 4:13 PM Subject: Humes High School: 1949-53 Dear Mme, sorry disturbing you with this issue. My name is Alessio Liberati (Mr.) and I am from Rome, Italy. Probably, you had others asking the same thing so I hope not annoying you again , I just would really be glad to succeed on finding out a particular historical memory. I'm longlife Elvis Presley fan since I was 14, I'm in contact with Elvis fans all over the world and I thank Internet for providing this big chance. I also wrote some publications in the past regarding the impact of Elvis' music phenomenon here in Italy. During the past years, I have been desperately looking for any early 1948-1953 Elvis photo/picture and/or candid/snapshot that would show him holding and/or playing his guitar. I was told from some other memphians, Elvis used to bring up his guitar at Humes and all around Memphis as well during his earliest gigs, playing it at school or elsewhere around the city among other buddies. My first question is: since you had the great chance to be in the same school Elvis was at the time, did you ever see Elvis playing at school when he still was virtually unknown as singer ? And/or, did you ever see Elvis playing outside the school and/or around Memphis during 1949-53 ? Did you ever watch Elvis singing/playing when he was still no that famous ? How was it ? How was Elvis in that period ? My second question is: do you (and/or other people you might know in Memphis) know anyone who could have taken a photo of Elvis while he was holding/playing his guitar during the period 1949-53 and eventually still retains the photo ? Or, do you know anyone out in Memphis who could help me out with this my personal research ? Kindest Regards and thanks beforehand, any help much appreciated. Mr. Alessio Liberati |

Email from Betty The news is somewhat better tonight than yesterday. I just talked to Patty to see what the Dr. had to say this morning. He said her cancer was stage 1 which is better than she thought. She will have a hysterectomy Sept. 15 and will not have to have radiation. She told him the surgery would be ok since she didn't plan to have any more children anyway. After the initial shock of the news yesterday, she sounded much better tonight. I will be keeping in touch with her before the surgery and let you all know if there are any changes. Keep her in your prayers during this difficult time she will be going through. |

I am willing to readily admit that I do not recall in any way the Jungle Garden near the old Memphis Funeral Home but after much serious searching my memory bank I have come to the conclusion that maybe those of us leaving in the high rent district of Poplar just naturally went to the higher class Jungle Garden at Union and Belvedere. If indeed there really was one on Union near the current express, I would assume that their proximity to the funeral home resulted in an occasional mix of formaldehyde mixed in with the beverages and could explain the aberrant behavior of some of our classmates. And one of the actual results of that strange behavior is the memory lapse of some of these million dollar bets. |

The question of where the Jungle Garden was located has been answered. It was on Union at the point where the Expressway crosses. Jim Harper now owes Jim Aylor one million dollors. He is trying to get out of it by saying we bet a million on something else that he was right on, but he is the only one who can remember that bet. |

Our body-guard for this adventure will be Jim Aylor and we will spend a considerable amount of time around Jackson Street, Chelsea, Thomas, Lauderdale, Poplar, Manassas, Parkway, Orleans, Ayers, Vollentine, Mosby, Alabama and all the other areas that supported the attendees of good old “Humes High School. Those of you that are still pretty mobile and still have some fond memories and would be interested to visit “Malone Swimming Pool” one more time along with other places like Porky’s at Chelsea and Thomas and other points of interest, let us know via the web page and we’ll see what we can arrange. I need your help on a little trivia that could possibly boost my intelligent quotient and maybe denigrate Jim Aylor’s, where exactly was Fortune’s Jungle Garden located. To be more specific, what street intersected with Union that housed this landmark? Jim Harper |

A rumor is circulating that about nine to ten graduates on the 1954 Class gathered at one of their homes in central Mississippi for an extended weekend of festivities and during the process a law enforcement agent entered this home and proceeded to perform sobriety test on about seven or eight of them and had this wild partying taken place in a private residence, it is reported that several of them would have spent the rest of the weekend in jail and be facing a substantial fine. Your humble web-master will neither confirm or deny this incident, he only reports the information that is sent to him. |

It is with great sorrow, that we inform you of this. Tom Williams' health is failing fast. He has been diagnosed with 'Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). It is terminal and now he has been placed on HOSPICE. This is generally done only with a very short time remaining. He has changed from a very active person, to barely able to recognize some of his closest friend. Tom was active in the US Marine Corp activities, a member of the burial team, was voted twice as "Marine of the Year". We ask that you remember Tom and Barbara in your prayers during this most overwhelming time. |

Email from Betty Guy I have had a miserable last 3 weeks wheelchair bound. My Smoky Bear daughter Tina accidentally started a grassfire. When I saw it I ran to try to help her put it out. We ended up calling the fire dept. When I got to a slight incline covered with pine needles, I slipped and fell. I did protect my knee replacement leg, but did tremendous damage to my right foot-broke both big bones on each ankle and fractured numerous bones in between. My doctor said I did a good job of setting a record for broken foot bones. I knew when I fell, I had broken something because I heard and felt the popping. I have to keep this foot elevated and absolutely no weight on it at least 6 weeks, 3 more to go. I go back to Dr. March 16. I will then find out what I can or cannot do. |

One of our classmates and his lovely bride are deep into a redecorating extravaganza that I understand now has a team from “Divine Design” and possibly Martha Stewart planning a visit to offer their assistance. In my humble opinion, this couple has hit the big time when they draw people of this stature. I do not want to name this couple and add to their stress at this time but our beloved classmate retired from the Memphis Police Department and has curly hair with grey spots in it. |

I heard a rumor that Jim and Brenda Aylor are expecting another baby and while I personally find this hard to believe it should never the less be checked out. I know that Brenda is young enough but I am of the opinion that Jim is just too d--- old to cut the mustard anymore. Of course it could also refer to another grandchild but I like the first part better. Or it could just be exactly what I said and only a rumor but wouldn’t it be funny if it were true. |

Betty (Rush) Guy and Jerry (Hound Dog) Wilson are beginning to assimilate information on the interest level for a 55th Class Reunion in June of 2009. They will welcome any assistance in locating any of our classmates, so if you know the address, phone number or e-mail address of some of the “54” group, please get in touch with Betty or Jerry. In conversation with Betty, I do know that she has located Lawrence McRay who missed our 50th so progress is being made. It may seem early to start talking about June of 2009 but the time and energy it will take to locate and organize this event will be enormous. I am of the opinion that several classmates that missed our 50th now regret it and will look forward to a 55th.You may reach Betty at (731) 435-1135 or e-mail her at bettyguy01@charter.net. You can reach Jerry at (901) 475-0063 or e-mail him at Wilson_jerry@bellsouth.net. Please join us in making this a reality for 2009. We have lost many of our classmates that I’m sure many wish they could have seen again so let’s don’t let this opportunity slip by us. Thanks Jim Harper Email |

| Lynn and I recently returned from her 50th Class Reunion with the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis as the host hotel. An interesting side note, Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inns, built this property and then donated it to what I still call Memphis State. Pretty neat, he was an exceptional man. Meanwhile, back to the subject. I am convinced that people who attended Messick High must age faster than those from Humes and maybe Tech. This group had the appearance of having originated at one of the local nursing homes. They are a nice group, but damn, they are old. There is no way this group could have stayed with our group almost three years ago when we stayed up for three successive nights until it was actually the next day. I believe that their aging process could have something to do with all the hot dogs from Berratta's. As you are probably aware, hot dogs are made from dead pigs and there is no way they are going to help you stay young. Also, this group does not consume enough alcohol to ward off infirmities and aging. The only two people other than my lovely wife that looked as young as us, was a Humes graduate of 1955, Freeman Force and Betty Black Dawson, the wife of our |
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
former Humes graduate, Bobby Dawson. It was pretty evident that Betty's long years of association with Bobby contributed to her youthful appearance. O.K., that is enough "Who Shot John" for now. Really this is a good group of people that I always enjoy spending time with and we have a lot of fun. And even though the President of their Senior Class cast aspersions on my good name, I still like them. He had the audacity to make the additional comment as he thanked those that hosted the Hospitality Room, that about the only thing Lynn's husband, Jim, did was sit on the couch, drink whiskey and tell dirty jokes. I do take exception to that remark because I also stood up a good bit, drink whiskey and told dirty jokes. We Humes people have a reputation that we must protect. Even though one of the girls said that her Mom would not let her date boys from Humes, she was somewhat enthralled with me. Another said Saturday night or maybe Sunday morning (she was not drunk) that I had a rugged, rough but handsome face. It only took about one half a bottle of Crown to get this compliment. At least this will give us something new on our web page. |
